The German Bundestag (German Parliament) is housed in the historic Reichstag Building in Berlin since 1999. Visiting the German Bundestag gives you a unique experience combining politics, history, and architectural wonder. It is an educational experience about the German government and allows you to explore Germany's architectural masterpiece - the Reichstag Building and its iconic dome.
Imagine having a two-in-one adventure in one historic place.
The Reichstag Building
When Berlin became the imperial capital of the German Empire in 1871, the need for a parliamentary seat led to the construction of the Reichstag Building. Designed by architect Paul Wallot with elements of Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicism, construction of the building lasted 10 years, from 1884 to 1894.
The Reichstag was home to the German Parliament until 1933, also the end of the Weimar Republic. The building went through fire and extensive damage from war and was abandoned.
The new Reichstag building was unveiled on April 19, 1999, with a new glass dome - incorporating modern architectural design to the late 19th century building.
Bundestag 90-minute guided tour
Whether you're a political enthusiast, a history buff, or just curious, this 90-minute tour offers everyone an understanding of the German government functions and parliamentary process and a fascinating glimpse into Germany's past and present. The tour includes visiting various rooms within the Bundestag, allowing visitors to see firsthand where decisions that shape the country are made.
For most visitors, the tour's highlight is the walk up the spiral ramp inside the Reichstag Dome. This glass dome, which symbolizes the transparency of the government, was designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster and offers breathtaking views of Berlin's skyline. My visit happened on a cold rainy day but on a clear day you can see the following from the dome: The Federal Press Conference Building, Charite Hospital, The Television Tower, International Trade Center, Berlin Cathedral, and more.
