Local markets excite me. It is where I get to discover what the locals eat… and how they communicate and live. This local market is at Shan Hai Guan Road near West Nanjing Road in Shanghai.
Vendors sat on buckets or squatted by the road with buckets of a variety of fish, shrimp and hairy crab. October is hairy crab season in Shanghai. Two vendors were selling live chicken, one was slaughtering a live chicken for a customer and another was trying to catch one eel that escaped from the bucket.
Here are scenes from the market in photos:
Meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, dry goods and tofu are cheap in the local wet market. 500 grams of red rice was sold at 4.50 Yuan (about 75 cents), two chicken breasts and three chicken quarters was 25 Yuan (about $4) and my big daikon was 6 Yuan (less than $1).
My sister said a meal for four would be around $7. I think I could live with that? How about you?
Come on over tomorrow and find out where I will be visiting next.
