They say the most beautiful girls in China are from Suzhou. It must be the water, fresh air, the gardens or maybe the food. According to the locals I spoke to, these girls are no longer in Suzhou. They either migrated to the West or have moved to bigger cities like Shanghai and Beijing. What fascinated me were the local food, history, street culture, canals, museum and the gardens. Suzhou has all that and more.
When in Suzhou, you must try the Squirrel-shaped mandarin fish. It is a dish of deep-fried fish soaked with sweet and sour sauce. This dish costs 118 Yuan from a local restaurant near The Humble Administrator's Garden (pictured below). This restaurant only had a menu in Chinese. The cook and server only speak Chinese.
Suzhou Street food includes fried tofu, a variety of steamed dumplings, sweets and local fruits.
The streets along The Humble Admistrator's Garden are filled with vendors, rickshaws and artists. Take a look...
Suzhou is also about the canals, traditional boats and old houses along the canals. It is known as Venice of the East.
Suzhou is only 23 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station if you are traveling on the high speed train. It cost us 34.50 Yuan per person each way.
