Before I go further, let’s clarify what is a holiday. Being educated in British English and living in the United States for over 20 years, I realized some words that we use could be confusing to British English readers.
In the United Kingdom and elsewhere that writes like the British, the word ‘holiday’ means taking a vacation. In fact Oxford Dictionary (yes, I own an Oxford Dictionary) defined it as:
...an extended period of recreation, especially away from home or in travelling; a break from work or a day of festivity or recreation when no work is done, especially a religious festival
The Webster Dictionary (I own that too, 1983 version) described holiday as:
…a religious festival, a day of freedom from labor, day set aside for leisure and recreation, pertaining to a festival
One huge difference between British English and American English is the extended period of recreation away from home or traveling.
Here we are referring to the ‘one day set aside pertaining to a festival or event’ that is the Thanksgiving Holiday in the United States. The holiday email marketing we are referring to are the Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday in November. Shopping events that lead to Christmas holidays and the beginning of Christmas shopping.
The British has their holiday email marketing sales campaign too but not Black Friday sales. In the online world there are no borders, no time zones and no difference whether you are in England, Botswana, Uruguay or Japan. You can still conduct a Black Friday sales.
Consider that!
